Majority of International Students in Canada Plan to Obtain PR After Studies

Sixty percent of international students  in Canada want to apply for permanent residence after they complete their studies, a survey conducted by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) has found. The survey was conducted among the international students across the country. In a similar survey conducted by the CBIE earlier in 2015, only 51 percent of the international students had expressed their intention to apply for permanent residence in Canada. This year’s survey has shown that there has been a significant rise in the number of international students in Canada who plan to permanently reside in the country.

In the past few years, there has been a remarkable rise in the number of international students enrolled for various courses in Canada. A major reason for this is the policies introduced by the Canadian government that encourage international students to obtain permanent residence in the country after their studies.

Among the respondents to the CBIE survey, around 29% of the students had considered other countries as their study destinations before finally choosing Canada. Over half of them (54%) had applied to the US, 22% to the UK and 15% to Australia. The major reasons pointed out by these students for choosing to study in Canada were the quality of the education system, tolerant and nondiscriminatory nature of Canadian society and a safe environment to study.

Around 14000 international students responded to the CBIE survey, which was conducted between March and May 2018. They make up around 4% of the total number of international students in Canada pursuing post-secondary level courses. Ninety-four percent of these students said that they were satisfied with the education experience in Canada.

Among the respondents, 35 percent were pursuing bachelor’s degree courses, 17 percent doctoral studies and the rest were doing certificate or diploma programs or English-language programs.
