How to sponsor your family members for Canada migration through Quebec Family Class?

A Canadian citizen or permanent resident residing in Quebec can sponsor a close relative to come to Canada as a permanent resident through the Quebec Family Class Sponsorship program. The first step in such a sponsorship process is the Canadian citizen or permanent resident applying to be a sponsor. But in order to be eligible to apply, the sponsor and the person to be sponsored must meet certain requirements.

The prospective sponsor must submit the application for sponsorship to the Government of Canada. If you are found eligible to be a sponsor, you can submit an undertaking application along with an application from the person to be sponsored for a Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ) to the Quebec government. You must remember that, if you are planning to sponsor a person for permanent residence in Canada, you must be ready to support him/her financially when they arrive. You must also make sure that they will not have to seek financial assistance from the government at any point in time.

Canada CRS Calculator

Quebec Family Class: Application process:

There are two different processes for sponsoring family members to Quebec. They are:

  • Sponsoring a spouse, partner or dependent child
  • Sponsoring other eligible relatives

Sponsoring a spouse, partner or dependent child:

In order to sponsor a spouse, partner or dependent child, you must be at least 18 years of age. You must prove that you have the financial ability to support your spouse, partner or dependent child when they become a permanent resident in Canada.

To sponsor a spouse, partner or dependent child:

  • You and the person to be sponsored must sign a sponsorship agreement. In the agreement, the sponsor must commit that they would provide financial support to the sponsored person, if necessary. At the same time, the sponsored person must commit that they would make every effort to support him/ herself.
  • You are supposed to financially support a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner for three years from the date they become a permanent resident
  • You will have to financially support a dependent child for 10 years or until the child turns 25

Sponsoring other eligible relatives:

For sponsoring other eligible relatives under the Quebec Family Class, you must:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Reside physically in Quebec
  • Meet minimum income requirements

‘Other eligible relatives’ means

  • parents
  • grandparents
  • brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons who are orphaned, under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship
  • children under age 18 to be adopted in Canada

To sponsor your relative you and the person to be sponsored must sign a sponsorship agreement in which you commit that you would financially support them if necessary. The agreement will also state that the person to be sponsored will make all efforts to support themselves. However, dependent children below the age of 22 need not sign this agreement. Besides, Quebec residents must also sign an undertaking with the province- a contract to bind the sponsorship. The sponsor will have to promise that he/she would support the sponsored relative for a period of 3-10 years, from the date they become the permanent residents of Canada.

You cannot become a sponsor under Quebec Family Class if:

  • You have signed a sponsorship agreement in the past for another relative but failed to provide them with financial support
  • You have defaulted on a support order from the court, such as alimony or child support
  • You have received financial assistance from the Government for reasons other than disability
  • You were convicted of a violent criminal offence, offence against a relative or sexual offence. But factors such as the nature of the offence, how long ago it occurred or whether you were pardoned will also be taken into consideration
  • You have defaulted on an immigration loan
  • You have been declared bankrupt
  • You have previously sponsored relatives who later had to depend on the government for financial assistance

4 Tips to Help You Prepare for Your IELTS Exam!

The IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is the most popular English language proficiency test for international education and migration. IELTS test is of two types: Academic and General Training. The students who want to go for higher education in Canada, Australia and the US need to clear the Academic IELTS test. General IELTS test is for those who want to immigrate to these countries.

The IELTS test, designed by the world’s leading experts in language assessment, came into existence in 1989. In the test, the candidate will be tested in four skills: listening, writing, reading, and speaking.

Are you planning to study abroad or immigrate? Then here are a few tips that will help you to score high in the IELTS test:

1. Improve your English

It is better to improve your English language proficiency and there are a number of ways to do it. Listening to English language radio programs and songs, watching English television programs and movies will improve your listening skills. Try listening to programs of various English accents including American, Canadian and Australian. You can improve your speaking skills by talking to your friends and family in English. Reading skills can be improved by reading English books and periodicals. For improving writing skills, one can practice writing letters, e-mails and notes in English language.

2. Understand and improve your pace

IELTS comprises four tests– listening, writing, reading, and speaking. A person has to attend all the four tests on the same day, one after another. There will be no breaks in between. By taking sample IELTS tests, you will be able to know at what pace you will have to complete each test. You can also practice sample questions. While taking the test, remember not to overspend your time on a single section, ignoring the others.

3. Learn about the test format

Before taking the IELTS test, you need to clearly understand the test format. While the Listening and Speaking components are same for both Academic and General tests, Reading and Writing components are different. Usually a booklet is given to the candidates detailing how to respond correctly to each part. You must also read the Notice to candidates thoroughly to get a clear idea about the test format.

4. Attend preparation classes

Attending IELTS classes will give you a clear idea about the test. You will also get a chance to practice all parts of the test. While doing this, you will be able to learn from your mistakes and thus, perform better at the real test.

5 Things You Can Do by Visiting Canada on a Visitor Visa

Canada visitor visa, also known as Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an official document placed on your passport to show that you have met all the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident. Temporary Resident Visa is issued by the Canadian visa office and you must obtain it before you leave for Canada.

In order to obtain Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), you must meet certain conditions which include:

  • Satisfy visa officer that you would leave Canada after your period of stay
  • Have enough money to support yourself while you are in Canada
  • Have no record of criminal activity
  • Be in good health

Once you arrive in Canada on a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) you are allowed to do the following things:

Stay and travel anywhere in Canada

Your Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) confers on you the temporary legal status to live or travel anywhere in the country. But you get to enjoy this legal status only till your Canadian visitor visa expires. The duration of your stay in Canada is determined by a border services officer at the port of entry in Canada. Mostly, the visitors get a six-month validity period for their Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). But if you are authorised to stay for less than six months, the date on which you must leave Canada will be indicated on your passport. If there is no stamp or handwritten date or document on your passport that indicates the expiry date of the Canadian visitor visa, your temporary resident status will be valid for six months.

Search for a job

It is clear that visitor visas are not meant to be used for job hunt. Yet the visa holders are not prevented from searching for a job during their temporary stay in Canada. Meeting the prospective employers in person is likely to increase the chances of placement. So it is ideal to look for a job while you are in Canada than from overseas.

If you are planning to look for a job in Canada, never conceal this fact before the visa officer. But you will have to prove your intention to leave Canada when your visa expires, irrespective of whether you get a job or not. You will also have prove to the immigration officer that you will not work in Canada without a valid work permit.

Study in Canada

You can join for a short-term course in Canada while you are a temporary resident. But there are a few conditions which include:

  • The institution where you have enrolled for the course must not be a Designated Learning Institute (DLI)
  • The duration of the course must not be more than six months
  • You must complete the course before your visa expires
  • The course must not be part of a longer study program

Business activities

Though you are not allowed to work while you are in Canada on Temporary Resident Visa, you can engage in business activities. These may include purchasing goods and services for your business from Canadian businesses, visiting a business site and meeting people for business transactions. Upon invitation from a Canadian business, you can also receive training for the use or sale of their products.
