Hello, future entrepreneur! This is for you!
Now that you’ve completed your undergraduate degree in India, studying MBA- Master of Business Management will be a worthy ‘ticket’ to your entrepreneur journey. An MBA can lead you to several professional opportunities in fields such as:
- Finance and Banking
- Human Resource Management
- Entrepreneurship
- Data Analytics etc.
But for Indian students, the big question is “where should I study MBA? In India or abroad?”. This blog has the answer. You will read the differences between studying MBA abroad and an MBA in India.
Note: When mentioning ‘abroad’ in the blog, it is synonymous with the countries ‘Canada and the UK’. We have focused on the specificities of Canada and the United Kingdom, which are international student-friendly and offer post-graduation work opportunities, with the benefit of immigration pathways.
Entrance test for studying MBA
India: Several entrance exams can get you into Indian Business schools such as CAT (Common Admission Test), MAT, CMAT, and even GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).
Abroad: Not all business schools need a GMAT score abroad. Many colleges in the UK and Canada waive off GMAT scores, which only require a good academic profile or graduate degree in business management or a few years of work experience.

Which should you choose: GRE or GMAT?
Almost all universities/colleges abroad accept GRE scores for graduate studies including non-MBA programs. When you take GRE, you have the benefit of toggling between an MBA course and other courses abroad.
On the other hand, all B-schools accept GMAT, which is a more MBA-specific entrance test.
Curriculum
Master of Business Administration (MBA) is usually a 2-year program. However, there are also 1-year programs available both in India and countries like Canada and the UK. The first year of studying MBA covers the foundation studies that prepare students to learn the basics of business management, followed by electives in the second year that enriches your core interests.
India: Most MBA students are either freshers or have 1 or 2-years of experience, so there is little to learn from fellow students.
Abroad: Take the case of business schools in Canada and the UK, which offer an excellent learning environment; the course is designed in such a way that it covers the study of the global business market. Students usually have good work experience before joining the course, hence you get insights from your classmates.
Global exposure
India: MBA programs in India lack global industrial exposure. Though many B-schools have a good reputation, there are still colleges that provide only theoretical and less business exposure.
Abroad: The exposure that students gain when studying in business schools in Canada and the UK is aimed at global business demands. To compete with the international workforce, studying MBA overseas seems the need of the hour.
Job opportunities after MBA
India: At this very time, an MBA is pursued in large numbers which have been overhyped in recent years just like an ‘Engineering degree’. The result: unemployment due to excess graduates and lack of qualified professionals. If you wish to set up your career just in India, you can opt for a studying MBA here.
Abroad: The vantage that studying MBA abroad holds is the career opportunities in attractive countries like the UK and Canada. With Canada inviting more international students and skilled professionals to settle in Canada, there are huge job opportunities there. Moreover, in the UK and Canada, there are Post Graduate Work Permits that allow international students to work after graduation.
Business schools
India: Indian Institute of Management (IIM) is a group of reputed business schools in India. Despite IIMs, there are other private B-schools as well. However, the paucity of quality institutions and high cut-off scores in the entrance exams due to the soaring demand for an MBA has shrunk the opportunity to get into the institutions.
Abroad: There are many globally ranked business schools abroad in which you can study MBA with or without a GMAT score.

ROI: Return of Investment
India: Tuition fees and expenses are generally more affordable than studying abroad. Yet, after graduation, chances of you getting high-paid jobs are less. You will be competing with lakhs of MBA graduates in getting a job. If you wish to grow your regional business connection and set up a business here, you can choose one of the Indian B-schools.
Abroad: Though the tuition fees and living expenses are high (you can also go with many scholarships available for international students), you will be paid high on employment abroad and in India as well. Since your overseas MBA degree is highly valued, you are likely to land in reputed companies.
Hence, in terms of ROI, studying MBA in countries like Canada and the UK seems a bright idea. And the best ROI would be the worthwhile knowledge you gain during your study abroad.
